Tamil Nadu Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme: ₹1,000 a Month for Women Heads of Families
The Tamil Nadu Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme, officially the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, gives eligible women who head their families ₹1,000 every month, paid straight into their bank accounts. It recognises the unpaid work women do for their households and supports their financial independence.
What is the scheme?
The scheme was launched on 15 September 2023 by the then Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. Eligible women receive ₹1,000 per month, or ₹12,000 a year, through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The money helps them manage everyday household expenses and make their own spending decisions. Both rural and urban women are covered, including those from economically disadvantaged and marginalised backgrounds.
Latest update: The Tamil Nadu Government reportedly transferred the October 2026 instalment of ₹1,000 to eligible beneficiaries on 15 October 2026. You can check your payment status on the official scheme portal.

Will the amount go up to ₹2,500?
The current Tamil Nadu Government promised in its election manifesto to raise the monthly assistance from ₹1,000 to ₹2,500, under a proposed scheme called Madhippumigu Magalir Thittam. At that rate, the annual amount would be ₹30,000 instead of ₹12,000.
That scheme has not been launched yet, so ₹2,500 is not an active benefit. For now, the amount remains ₹1,000 per month. Watch official announcements for any change.
