Sikkim Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana: A Simple Guide for Mothers

Many mothers in Sikkim look after their children and homes without any income of their own. The Sikkim Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana (SASY), launched by the Government of Sikkim in 2021, was created to help them. It gives eligible non-working mothers financial assistance so they can feel more secure and become more self-reliant.

What the scheme offers

Eligible mothers receive ₹40,000 every year. The amount is generally paid in two instalments of ₹20,000 each, into a savings account opened in the mother’s own name. The scheme is run by the Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department.

The money can be used for children’s education and family expenses. It can also support small livelihood activities such as farming and animal husbandry.

Who can apply

The applicant must be a non-working mother aged between 18 and 59. Unmarried, widowed, divorced and separated mothers who are responsible for children are also covered, as are eligible POCSO victims.

She needs a valid Sikkim Subject Certificate, Certificate of Identification or Residential Certificate, and a valid Voter Card of a ward under her Gram Panchayat or Urban Local Body. She must also belong to the Priority Household (PHH) or Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) category.

There are some conditions that rule an applicant out. She must not receive a pension from the State Government, the Central Government or any other government agency. No member of her family may be in regular employment with the State or Central Government, a public sector undertaking, a bank or a similar organisation. Neither she nor her spouse may be an enlisted government contractor or supplier.

Documents you will need

Keep these ready before you go to the office: an attested copy of your Sikkim Subject Certificate, Certificate of Identification or Residential Certificate; three passport-size photographs; your Voter Card and an attested copy of your Elector Photo Identity Card; your PHH or AAY document; your child’s birth certificate; your Aadhaar card; a Gram Sabha or Ward Sabha resolution; and the front page of your bank passbook.

How to apply

Applications are made offline. First, collect the application form from your Block Development Office (BDO). Fill it in, attach the documents and photographs, and submit it to the concerned authority.

After that, the Social Welfare Inspector checks your application and documents. It is then verified by the Social Welfare Officer, the Block Development Officer or Municipal Commissioner, the Additional District Collector (Development) and the District Collector, as applicable. Once the checks are complete, the competent authority approves eligible beneficiaries, and the assistance is paid through the prescribed mechanism, which includes constituency-level cheque distribution programmes.

This multi-level verification may seem long, but its purpose is to make sure the help reaches only those who meet the conditions.

Two awards worth knowing about

Aama Samman Diwas includes two awards that are easy to confuse.

The Pragatisheel Aama Puraskar honours scheme beneficiaries who have used the assistance well to build a livelihood and support their families. Three winners receive ₹5,00,000, ₹3,00,000 and ₹2,00,000.

The Aama Samman Puraskar is for deserving mothers who are not beneficiaries of the scheme. One mother from each Assembly Constituency receives ₹51,000. It was presented on Aama Samman Diwas, 10 August 2026.

Separately, the State Bank of Sikkim felicitates 18 Best Aama Account Holders each year, three from each district, with prizes of ₹2,00,000, ₹1,00,000 and ₹50,000.

How many mothers are covered

At present the scheme covers 32,000 mothers across all 31 territorial Assembly Constituencies and the Sangha Constituency, roughly 1,000 in each. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced that coverage will grow to 50,000 beneficiaries from 2027, with more than 1,500 mothers in every constituency.

Latest news

On 30 September 2026, the Information and Public Relations Department announced a cheque distribution programme in the 15-Rangang-Yangang Constituency. On 3 October, cheques were scheduled to be handed out at Yangang Senior Secondary School Hall for mothers from the Kolthang-Lingmoo, Nia-Mangzing, Sripatam-Gagyong and Rangang-Yangang Gram Panchayat Units. Other women-focused schemes

The Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana is part of a wider set of welfare initiatives for women in Sikkim. These include the Sikkim Aama Sahayog Yojana, which provides 4 free LPG refills per year, and the Bahini Yojana for girl students.
