Odisha Rural Backyard Duckery Scheme: 50 Ducklings to Start a Small Farm at Home

For many rural families, a few animals in the backyard can mean steady extra income. Ducks are hardy, need little space and give both eggs and meat. The Odisha Rural Backyard Duckery Scheme helps eligible families start duck farming by providing ducklings and part of the set-up cost.

What the scheme is

Officially called Livelihood Support to Farmers through Rural Backyard Duck Farming, it runs under Prani Sampad Samruddhi Yojana. The Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, under the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (FARD) Department, Government of Odisha, implements it. The 2026-27 guidelines provide for 3,000 units across the state’s 30 districts.

What a beneficiary receives

Each selected beneficiary gets one unit, with a total value of ₹5,000:

  1. 50 unsexed ducklings, about two weeks old, supplied in a single batch (₹3,750)
  2. ₹750 towards building a night shelter from locally available materials
  3. ₹500 for initial feed and transportation of the ducklings

The scheme gives 100% assistance for these specified components. Feeding costs after the initial supply are the farmer’s own responsibility, which is worth planning for before you apply.

Beneficiaries also get training in feeding, watering, brooding and caring for young ducklings. Livestock Inspectors, Gomitras and Prani Mitras give guidance in the field, and veterinary staff support healthcare, including routine vaccination.

The scheme supports Khaki Campbell and Indian Runner ducks. Under the guidelines’ assumptions, each duck produces around 250 eggs per year. Income comes from selling eggs, male ducks and older laying ducks, but actual earnings depend on production, deaths among the birds, feed costs and market prices, so treat the figure as a guideline rather than a promise.

Who can apply

Applicants must belong to one of these groups:

  1. Farmers from Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes
  2. Women farmers
  3. Transgender applicants who meet the scheme’s requirements
  4. Persons with at least 40% disability, certified by the competent authority
  5. Poor farmers who qualify under the guidelines

Aadhaar linking is required to prevent duplicate benefits, and the guidelines place family-level restrictions on receiving assistance under the same scheme. The source does not spell these restrictions out, so ask your Block Veterinary Officer (BVO) if more than one person in your household might apply.

Documents

Keep ready your Aadhaar card, ration card, a copy of the first page of your bank passbook showing your name and account details, and any category certificate or disability certificate that applies to you.

How to apply online

Applications go through the Go Sugam Odisha portal. Open the portal and register or log in. Find the Rural Backyard Duck Farming scheme under the relevant livestock or poultry services, and check that the scheme name and financial year (2026-27) are correct. Fill in your personal, bank and eligibility details, upload your documents, review everything and submit. Save the application or acknowledgement number if one is given.

The Block Veterinary Officer verifies the application, and the Chief District Veterinary Officer (CDVO) is involved in approval. If you are selected, follow the department’s instructions on the distribution of ducklings, shelter and feed assistance, and training.

If you need help applying

Not everyone is comfortable with an online portal, and the source gives an offline route for guidance. Visit your local BVO or the District Veterinary Office. Ask about the application process, confirm you are eligible, and ask whether an offline form is available or whether you must apply on the portal. Carry your Aadhaar card, ration card, bank passbook first page and any certificates. The source says offline submission is possible only if the office permits it, so ask first.

Is the application open?

The guidelines are for 2026-27, but the source does not give an opening date or a last date. It advises checking the portal or the local veterinary office for current application availability. Since only 3,000 units are planned across the state, it makes sense to ask early.
