Coconut Palm Insurance Scheme (CPIS): A Quick Overview
Coconut growers face constant risks from cyclones, floods, drought, pests and diseases. The Coconut Palm Insurance Scheme (CPIS) offers insurance cover for eligible palms so that farmers can limit these losses. Here is a brief look at how it works under the revised 2026 guidelines.
What Is the Scheme?
Introduced on a pilot basis in 2009-10, CPIS is implemented by the Coconut Development Board (CDB) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, in coordination with the Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd. (AIC) and state Agriculture or Horticulture Departments. It covers Tall, Dwarf and Hybrid palms.
Key Benefits
- ₹1,900 per palm for palms aged 4-15 years
- ₹3,700 per palm for palms aged 16-60 years
- Premium sharing: CDB pays 85% and the farmer pays 15%
- Risks covered: storms, cyclones, floods, heavy rain, lightning, fire, earthquakes, landslides, pests and diseases
- Drought: compensation of 25% of the sum insured when drought is officially declared
- Multi-year policies: up to three years, with rebates of 7% (two years) and 12% (three years)
The sum insured is not an automatic payment for every damaged tree. Compensation depends on the insured event, loss assessment and policy conditions.
Who Is Eligible?
- At least 10 healthy, nut-bearing palms in a contiguous area (older guidelines said five)
- Dwarf and Hybrid palms aged 4-60 years; Tall palms aged 7-60 years
- All eligible palms in the same contiguous plantation must be insured
- Unhealthy, senile and non-bearing palms are excluded
Key Exclusions
Theft, war, riots, malicious damage, wilful negligence, improper maintenance, and natural death of a palm are not covered. The guidelines are inconsistent on wild animal attacks, so confirm this with the insurer.
