Tamil Nadu Sportsmen Development Allowance Scheme: A Quick Overview

The Tamil Nadu Government has launched a new monthly allowance scheme to support young athletes training at government sports facilities. Here is a brief look at what it offers and who can benefit.

What Is the Scheme?

The Tamil Nadu Sportsmen Development Allowance Scheme gives monthly financial assistance to sportspersons training at government-run sports hostels and specialised sports centres. The money is meant to help athletes manage their personal expenses while they focus on training.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the scheme on 29 October 2026 at the closing ceremony of the Chief Minister’s Trophy 2026 state-level competitions, held at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai. The nodal agency is the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT).

Key Benefits

  • ₹500 per month for athletes at regular SDAT hostels and specialised sports centres
  • ₹1,000 per month for athletes at premier sports centre hostels
  • Around 2,600 sportspersons expected to benefit
  • ₹1.77 crore allocated annually for the scheme

Not every hostel student gets ₹1,000. The higher amount applies only to those at premier sports centre hostels.

Who Is Eligible?

Sportspersons training at SDAT hostels, SDAT specialised sports centres, and premier sports centre hostels are the intended beneficiaries. The government has not yet published detailed conditions such as age limits, income criteria, or other selection requirements.

How to Apply

No separate application form, portal, or document checklist has been announced. Athletes already enrolled at eligible SDAT institutions should contact their hostel authorities about beneficiary verification and how the allowance will be paid.

Athletes who are not yet enrolled can apply through the existing SDAT hostel admission process, which includes district-level and state-level selection trials. Admission notifications and trial details are available on the official SDAT website.
