Tamil Nadu Free Bicycle Scheme
A long walk or bus ride to school can push students to drop out, especially after Class 10. The Tamil Nadu Free Bicycle Scheme (known as Puthiya Payanam, Puthiya Vegam) gives eligible Class 11 students a free bicycle so they can reach school easily and continue their education. Boys and girls benefit equally, irrespective of their parents’ income.
Latest Update
In the Tamil Nadu Budget 2026-27, the government announced an enhanced package: from 2026-27, each bicycle comes with a free helmet and water bottle. ₹277 crore has been allocated, and about 5.32 lakh Class 11 students are expected to benefit. The distribution schedule and implementation details remain subject to official updates.
