Sikkim Aama Sahayog Yojana: Help With Four LPG Refills a Year for Rural BPL Mothers

In many rural homes, an LPG cylinder is a real expense, and when money is tight, families go back to cooking on firewood. That means smoke in the kitchen and extra hours spent collecting wood, and it is women who carry most of that burden. The Sikkim Aama Sahayog Yojana, run by the Rural Development Department of the Government of Sikkim, is meant to keep clean cooking fuel within reach for poor rural families.

What the scheme offers

Eligible mothers receive ₹4,500 a year towards four LPG refills. The aims are to lower cooking costs for poor families, protect women from smoke-related health risks, and encourage clean fuel in place of firewood.

You may see ₹4,400 mentioned in older news. That was the amount in the cheques given to mothers in August and September 2025, the first year. The current amount is ₹4,500.

Where the scheme stands

The scheme was launched on 10 August 2025 at Rangpo, during Aama Samman Diwas. At the second Aama Samman Diwas, held at Rangpo on 10 August 2026, the Chief Minister said that more than 4,200 rural mothers are receiving the ₹4,500 annual assistance, and cheques were also distributed at the event.

Who is eligible

There are three conditions. The beneficiary must be a woman or mother, belong to a Below Poverty Line (BPL) household, and live in a rural area of Sikkim. Women from non-BPL families are not covered, according to these conditions.

Do you need to apply?

This scheme works differently from most. There is no online portal and no prescribed application form. The source says the application is “not required” in the usual sense, and that the process is offline and local:

  1. The Block Administrative Centre (BAC) and Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU) identify eligible BPL women in rural areas.
  2. Officials prepare the beneficiary list using the eligibility criteria and verify details where needed.
  3. Once the list is finalised, approved beneficiaries get the annual assistance through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Because there is no application window, there is no last date to apply. If you believe you qualify but have not been contacted, the source’s advice is to approach your local BAC or GPU, ask about the beneficiary list, and complete any verification the local authorities ask for.

A small difference worth noticing: in 2025, mothers received cheques, and the current method is described as DBT. Cheques were distributed again at the 2026 event, so the way you receive the money may vary. If you are on the list, ask your local office how your payment will reach you, and make sure your bank details are correct.

Documents

The government has not published an official document checklist. Since you are identified through local-level lists, it is sensible to keep ready the documents that usually prove BPL status, identity and bank details, but do not treat any list as official until the local authorities confirm what they need.

Don’t confuse it with the Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana

The Chief Minister mentioned both schemes at the same event, but they are different:

  1. Aama Sahayog Yojana: ₹4,500 a year for four LPG refills, for rural BPL mothers. No application form; beneficiaries are identified locally.
  2. Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana: ₹40,000 a year for eligible non-working mothers. Currently about 32,000 mothers receive it, and it is due to expand to 50,000 from 2027. This one does use an application form, available from the Block Development Office.

A mother may qualify for one, both or neither, so it is worth checking each separately.
