Pradhan Mantri Parivar Labh Yojana: ₹20,000 One-Time Support for Families Who Lose Their Breadwinner

Losing the main earner of a household is hard on any family, and harder on one already living below the poverty line. Pradhan Mantri Parivar Labh Yojana gives eligible bereaved families a one-time payment of ₹20,000 to help them through the immediate aftermath.

What is the scheme?

Pradhan Mantri Parivar Labh Yojana is a central government welfare scheme for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families that lose their primary breadwinner. It was previously known as the National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS), which began in 1995. The Government of India renamed it on 14 October 2026 and approved its continuation in the existing form for 2026-27 to 2030-31. So this is the same scheme under a new name, and the benefit amount has not changed.

It is a component of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), which has itself been renamed Pradhan Mantri Samajik Sahayata Yojana. The Ministry of Rural Development is the nodal agency.

Key features

  • One-time payment, not a pension. The ₹20,000 is a single lump sum.
  • Natural or accidental death. The scheme covers death from natural or other causes.
  • Men and women both count. Either can be the primary breadwinner.
  • Homemakers are recognised. Under the existing guidelines, a homemaker can be treated as a breadwinner.
  • Paid to the head of the household. The assistance goes to the surviving member identified as the household head after a local inquiry.

Who is eligible?

  1. The bereaved household must belong to the BPL category.
  2. The deceased must have been more than 18 and less than 60 years old at the time of death.
  3. The deceased must have been the primary breadwinner, contributing substantially to household income.
  4. The household may include the spouse, minor children, unmarried daughters and dependent parents. If an unmarried adult dies, it may include minor siblings and dependent parents.

Documents required

Requirements vary by state, but you will generally need:

  • Death certificate of the breadwinner
  • BPL certificate or accepted proof of BPL status
  • Applicant’s identity proof and address proof
  • Proof of the deceased person’s age
  • Details of the deceased and the applicant’s personal and household details
  • BPL household identification details (family ID and member ID), where applicable
