PM-KISAN (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi): A Complete Guide for Farmers

₹6,000 a year in direct income support for eligible landholding farmer families, now extended to 2030-31

Farming involves costs long before it brings income: seeds, fertiliser, irrigation, labour. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) gives eligible farmer families a predictable cash payment straight into their bank accounts to help meet those costs. This guide covers the benefits, who qualifies, how to register, how to complete e-KYC, and what to do if a payment does not arrive.

What Is PM-KISAN?

PM-KISAN is a Central Sector Scheme launched by the Government of India on 24 February 2019. It provides financial assistance to eligible landholding farmer families to help with agricultural inputs, crop cultivation and household needs. Payments are made through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), so the money reaches farmers without intermediaries.

The scheme was first launched for small and marginal farmer families and was later expanded to cover all eligible landholding farmer families, regardless of the size of their holding. It is run by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and now benefits more than 9 crore farmers, making it one of India’s largest farmer welfare schemes.

Key Highlights

  • Benefit: ₹6,000 per year per eligible farmer family
  • Instalments: Three equal payments of ₹2,000 each
  • Payment mode: DBT into an Aadhaar-seeded bank account
  • How to apply: Online through the PM-KISAN portal, or at a nearby Common Service Centre (CSC)
  • Toll-free helpline: 1800115526

Latest Updates

24th instalment released. The 24th instalment was released on 30 October 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi released it at a programme in Banaskantha, Gujarat. It covers more than 9.34 crore eligible farmer families, with a DBT of more than ₹18,690 crore.

Scheme extended to 2030-31. On 31 July 2026, the Union Cabinet approved the continuation of PM-KISAN for five years, from 2026-27 to 2030-31, with a total outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore. The annual assistance remains ₹6,000 per eligible family, payable in three equal instalments.

If your instalment has not arrived, go to the PM-KISAN portal and use the Know Your Status facility to check your payment. If nothing has come through, verify your e-KYC, bank account details, Aadhaar seeding and land record status. You can also file a query on the Help Desk.

How the Payments Work

The ₹6,000 is paid in three instalments of ₹2,000, generally released every four months:

Period Instalment
April to July First
August to November Second
December to March Third

The money goes directly into the beneficiary’s Aadhaar-seeded bank account. Assistance depends on meeting the eligibility conditions and on land records and e-KYC being in order.

Who Is Eligible?

All landholding farmer families with cultivable land recorded in the land records of their State or Union Territory are eligible, irrespective of landholding size. For this scheme, a farmer family means a husband, wife and minor children who own cultivable land according to those records.

A few points to note:

  • Benefits depend on verification of land records and fulfilment of all scheme conditions.
  • If a landowner dies, eligible successor families can continue to receive benefits after verification of land records and compliance with the guidelines.

Who Is Not Eligible?

The following are excluded:

  • All institutional landholders
  • Former and present holders of constitutional posts
  • Former and present Ministers, State Ministers, and Members of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies and State Legislative Councils
  • Former and present Mayors of Municipal Corporations and Chairpersons of District Panchayats
  • Serving or retired officers and employees of Central or State Government ministries, departments, offices, PSUs, autonomous bodies and local bodies (Multi Tasking Staff, Class IV and Group D employees are exempt from this exclusion)
  • Retired pensioners receiving a monthly pension of ₹10,000 or more (again excluding MTS, Class IV and Group D pensioners)
  • Persons who paid Income Tax in the previous assessment year
  • Registered professionals in practice, such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, chartered accountants and architects
  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
  • Tenant farmers and cultivators with no cultivable land recorded in their own name
  • Farmers cultivating land recorded in the name of a father, forefathers or other family member, unless ownership has been legally transferred to them

The last two points are the ones that most often catch families by surprise. If the land is still in your father’s name, the scheme’s rules say you are not eligible until it is legally transferred to you.

Completing e-KYC

E-KYC is mandatory to keep receiving instalments. There are three ways to do it.

OTP-based e-KYC (portal or mobile app):

  1. Open the PM-KISAN portal and click e-KYC.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number.
  3. Submit the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

Biometric e-KYC (CSC or State Seva Kendra):

  1. Visit your nearest CSC or SSK with your Aadhaar card and Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  2. The operator completes biometric authentication. A nominal fee may apply.

Face authentication (mobile app):

  1. Download the PM-KISAN Mobile App and the Aadhaar Face RD App from the Google Play Store.
  2. Log in with your registered mobile number and open the Beneficiary Status page.
  3. If e-KYC shows “No,” select the e-KYC option, enter your Aadhaar number, give consent and complete the face scan.

E-KYC status is usually updated within 24 hours. You can check it through Know Your Status on the portal or the Kisan eMitra service.

Generate Your Farmer ID

PM-KISAN beneficiaries are advised to create a Farmer ID on the Farmer Registry Portal of their State or Union Territory. It is a unique digital identity that helps verify farmer records for agricultural schemes and services, and keeping it updated can help you avoid verification problems later.

  1. Open your State or UT’s Farmer Registry Portal and choose Farmer Registration or Create Farmer ID.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number and complete OTP verification.
  3. Provide your personal details, address and mobile number.
  4. Enter your land details as they appear in the official land records.
  5. Check the information and submit. A unique Farmer ID is generated after verification.

Each State and UT runs its own portal, so use the one for your region, and make sure your Aadhaar, mobile number and land records are up to date.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

For problems with registration, payments, e-KYC, Aadhaar verification or beneficiary status:

  1. Open the PM-KISAN portal and select Help Desk – Query Form.
  2. Enter your registration number, Aadhaar number, account number or mobile number.
  3. Describe your query in the prescribed format and submit.
  4. Note any reference number generated so you can follow up.

Keep your registration number and Aadhaar details handy to speed up resolution.

Common Reasons Payments Get Stuck

  • E-KYC not done. This is among the first things to check.
  • Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded. Payments go to an Aadhaar-seeded account.
  • Land records not verified or not matching. Your ownership details must appear correctly in the official records.
  • Land not in your name. Tenant farmers and those cultivating land recorded in a relative’s name are not eligible unless ownership is legally transferred.

Related Scheme: Crop Insurance

PM-KISAN is income support, not crop protection. Farmers who want cover against losses from natural calamities, pests and diseases can also consider the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).
