Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY): Cash Assistance of ₹600 to ₹1,400 for Delivering in a Health Facility

Pregnancy and childbirth can be expensive, and cost keeps many women away from safe care. The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) gives eligible mothers ₹600 to ₹1,400 for delivering at a health facility, and ASHA workers help them through registration, referral and follow-up. Registration is offline, through your local health worker.

What is the scheme?

JSY was launched on 12 April 2005. It is a 100% Centrally Sponsored Scheme under the National Health Mission (NHM), run by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It aims to reduce maternal and newborn deaths by encouraging institutional deliveries. ASHA workers help pregnant women register for antenatal check-ups, arrange referrals and transport, and access delivery and post-delivery care.

Documents

Requirements vary by state and facility. Commonly needed:

  • JSY card issued by the ANM or health facility
  • Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card
  • Aadhaar or other accepted ID
  • Bank passbook or account details, for DBT
  • BPL card, if needed to confirm eligibility
  • SC/ST certificate, where applicable
  • Referral slip from an ASHA, ANM or medical officer, if the private hospital requires it
  • Age proof, if your state asks for it

How to access the scheme

  1. Contact your ASHA worker, ANM or nearest government health centre once your pregnancy is confirmed.
  2. Register your pregnancy so your details are recorded.
  3. Collect your JSY card and MCP card.
  4. Keep your bank details, ID and BPL card or SC/ST certificate ready, if applicable.
  5. Attend your antenatal check-ups and ask your ASHA worker about a suitable delivery facility.
  6. Deliver at an eligible government facility or, if you qualify, an accredited private hospital.
  7. Complete any remaining formalities after delivery. The payment generally goes to your bank account, often by DBT.

If your payment is delayed or denied

A delay doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ineligible. It may be due to incomplete documents, wrong bank details or pending verification.

  1. Ask your ASHA worker or ANM to check that your registration and JSY details were recorded correctly.
  2. Contact the Medical Officer at the centre where you registered or delivered, and ask whether your documents were verified and the payment processed.
  3. Check your bank details, and ask about any Aadhaar-linking problem.
  4. Keep your JSY card, MCP card, delivery records and passbook handy.
  5. If it isn’t resolved, contact your district health office or the designated JSY grievance cell.
  6. You can also file a complaint on CPGRAMS. Save your complaint reference number.
