Fertilizer Subsidy Scheme 2026: Urea at ₹242 a Bag and Subsidised Prices on DAP, MOP and NPK
Fertilizer is one of the biggest costs a farmer faces each season. Under the Government of India’s Fertilizer Subsidy Scheme, farmers can buy urea at a fixed ₹242 per 45 kg bag, along with subsidised DAP, MOP, SSP and NPK. There is no separate application. You buy from an authorised dealer and verify your identity at the shop.
What is the scheme?
The Department of Fertilizers, under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, runs the scheme. It works through two systems:
- Urea Subsidy Scheme: the government fixes the retail price of urea, and the older urea subsidy system predates the NBS scheme.
- Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) Scheme: started on 1 April 2010, it gives subsidies on phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilizers such as DAP, MOP, SSP and NPK grades, based on their nutrient content.
The subsidy does not go to farmers’ bank accounts. The government pays eligible fertilizer companies based on recorded sales, so farmers get the benefit as a lower price at the counter. Sales are recorded through Point of Sale (PoS) devices under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

Latest prices and subsidy rates
These figures carry specific periods, so don’t assume they hold for all of 2026-27.
Retail prices
| Fertilizer | Reported price | Period or note |
|---|---|---|
| Urea | ₹242 per 45 kg bag | Excludes neem-coating charges and taxes; check for later notifications |
| DAP | ₹1,350 per 50 kg bag | Confirmed for Kharif 2026 (1 April to 30 September 2026). Rabi 2026-27 needs fresh confirmation |
| NPK 10-26-26 | ₹1,814.82 per 50 kg bag | Average retail price reported for 2025-26 |
| NPK 12-32-16 | ₹1,711.87 per 50 kg bag | Average retail price reported for 2025-26 |
| MOP | ₹1,710.54 per 50 kg bag | Average retail price reported for 2025-26 |
Urea has a government-controlled maximum retail price. Prices of NBS fertilizers are set by companies under government monitoring. When costs rise internationally, the government may add extra support, as it did to hold DAP at ₹1,350 per 50 kg bag in Kharif 2026.
NBS subsidy rates (per kg of nutrient)
| Nutrient | Rabi 2025-26 | Kharif 2026 (1 April to 30 September) |
|---|---|---|
| Nitrogen (N) | ₹43.02 | ₹47.32 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ₹47.96 | ₹52.76 |
| Potassium (K) | ₹2.38 | ₹2.38 |
| Sulphur (S) | ₹2.87 | ₹3.16 |
The Rabi 2025-26 rates are historical reference figures, not confirmed Rabi 2026-27 rates. These are also per kg of nutrient, not the price of a bag. The subsidy per bag depends on its nutrient content. Check the Department of Fertilizers site for the Rabi 2026-27 notification.
