Andhra Pradesh NTR Baby Kit Scheme: A Free Newborn Care Kit After a Government Hospital Delivery
The first few days at home with a newborn are hard enough without worrying about whether the family can afford everything a baby needs. The Andhra Pradesh NTR Baby Kit Scheme gives mothers who deliver in a government hospital a free kit of basic baby supplies. It also encourages families to choose an institutional delivery over a home birth. The state meets the full cost, and the kit is reported to be worth around ₹1,400.
A scheme with a history
The scheme was first launched by the TDP government in July 2016. In 2019 the YSRCP government renamed it the Dr. YSR Baby Kit Scheme and discontinued it after about a year. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu approved its revival under the original name on 6 May 2025. The Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department runs it, and the Andhra Pradesh Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APMSIDC) buys the kits.
What the kit contains
The earlier kit had 11 items, and the government says the new one will have 14. The full list of 14 is not available. The latest tender lists 13 items:
- Baby bed with attached mosquito net (1)
- Baby mackintosh (1)
- Baby dress with short (2 pieces)
- Baby towels (2)
- Washable baby nappies (6)
- Baby powder, 200 g (1)
- Baby shampoo, 100 ml (1)
- Baby oil, 200 ml (1)
- Baby soap, 150 g or 2 × 75 g (2 bars)
- Baby soap box (1)
- Baby rattle toy (1)
- Baby carrying warmer pouch (1)
- Kit bag (1)
The source says the list will be updated when the details are available, so what you receive may differ.
Who is eligible
- The mother must be a permanent resident of Andhra Pradesh.
- The delivery must take place at a government hospital, Primary Health Centre (PHC), Urban PHC, Community Health Centre (CHC) or another recognised public health institution in the state.
Deliveries at private hospitals, nursing homes or at home are not eligible. So if you are planning a delivery, this is a point worth knowing in advance.
Is the scheme running yet?
This is the confusing part. The source says the scheme was approved in May 2025 and lists its launch year as 2025, but it also tells mothers to “check directly… once the scheme formally launches” and asks, without an answer, when the kits will be distributed in 2026. It also says neither of the two application routes below is confirmed by an official document. So I cannot tell you for certain that kits are being handed out now. The best step is to ask the maternity ward or Anganwadi Centre where you plan to deliver.
How to get the kit
The source describes two possible routes, and says neither is officially confirmed.
Through the hospital:
- Deliver at a government hospital, PHC, UPHC, CHC or other recognised public facility in Andhra Pradesh.
- Complete your stay and discharge as advised.
- Collect the kit from hospital staff at discharge.
- Keep your Aadhaar and delivery records accurate, since distribution records may be based on them.
Through the Anganwadi:
- Visit your nearest Anganwadi Centre and ask for the free application form, if available.
- Fill it in and attach the documents, including the hospital discharge certificate or sheet.
- Ask the Anganwadi worker (Sevika) for help with the form.
- Submit it at the centre. The worker checks it and forwards eligible applications to the Department.
- Contact the centre to confirm selection and the date and place of kit distribution.
Documents that may be asked for
- Proof of Andhra Pradesh permanent residence
- Father’s Aadhaar card
- Mother’s Aadhaar card
- Mother’s PAN card
- MAMTA or POSHAN card
- Hospital discharge certificate or sheet
- An active mobile number
- The child’s immunisation card
- Any other document proving the baby was born in a registered hospital or health facility
A few of these look unusual for a baby kit, such as the mother’s PAN card and the immunisation card, which a newborn would not yet have. So treat the list as tentative, and ask your hospital or Anganwadi what is actually needed. Keep the discharge sheet safe above all.
Another scheme to know about
Families expecting a third or fourth child can look at the Andhra Pradesh Pillale Sampada Programme, a separate cash-incentive scheme launched by the state in July 2026.
