Most West Bengal schools follow a common age-band for entry into each primary and upper-primary class. The reference table below is the same chart the calculator above uses.

Class Age as on 1st January
Pre-Primary (P.P.) 5 years and above, less than 6 years
Class I 6 years and above, less than 7 years
Class II 7 years and above, less than 8 years
Class III 8 years and above, less than 9 years
Class IV 9 years and above, less than 10 years
Class V 10 years and above, less than 11 years
Class VI 11 years and above, less than 12 years
Class VII 12 years and above, less than 13 years
Class VIII 13 years and above, less than 14 years

Why 1st January Matters

Unlike a birthday-based calculation, West Bengal’s school age-eligibility rule freezes the calculation on a single fixed date: 1st January of the admission year. This means a child’s admission-year age doesn’t shift depending on when in the year they were born relative to the school session — every child in the state is measured on the same yardstick, on the same day.

In practice this means two children born in the same calendar year, one in February and one in November, will show the same “age as on 1st January” only if they were born in the same prior year — the month and day still matter for the exact completed-years count, but the reference date never moves.

Individual schools may apply small local variations or discretionary relaxation in genuine cases. This calculator reflects the general age-band circular; always confirm the final cut-off with the specific school’s admission notice for the year you’re applying.

How the Calculator Works

  • You enter only the date of birth — no other input is needed.
  • The tool computes completed age as on 1st January of the current admission year.
  • That age is matched against the class age-bands above to show the eligible class.
  • It also projects the same calculation forward for the next ten years, so you can see, at a glance, which class the child will fall into in any of the coming admission cycles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is age calculated for West Bengal school admission?

Age is calculated as on 1st January of the admission year, not on the date of admission or the child’s birthday during the session. Completed years and months as on that fixed date decide the eligible class.

What is the minimum age for Class I admission in West Bengal?

A child must be 6 years and above but less than 7 years of age, as on 1st January of the admission year, to be eligible for Class I.

What is the age limit for Pre-Primary admission?

For Pre-Primary (P.P.), a child should be 5 years and above but less than 6 years of age as on 1st January of the admission year.

Can a child get admission if slightly younger or older than the age band?

Age relaxation, if any, is at the discretion of the individual school’s management and is usually granted only in exceptional cases. Always confirm directly with the school regarding its relaxation policy.
