Tamil Nadu Annan Seer Thittam: A Gold Coin and a Silk Saree for Brides from Eligible Families

In Tamil Nadu, a brother’s gift to his sister at her wedding, known as seer, is a deeply loved tradition. The Annan Seer Thittam takes that spirit and turns it into a state welfare scheme. It gives eligible brides a gold coin and a silk saree, to ease some of the cost that weddings place on families.

What the scheme offers

Eligible brides will receive two things:

  1. An 8-gram, 22-carat gold coin
  2. One silk saree

The government has granted administrative and financial approval and allocated ₹812 crore for 2026-27. The scheme is run by the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department, and the Government Order was issued on 5 October 2026.

How the gifts will be arranged

The government will buy the gold coins and silk sarees through the prescribed tender process. The price of the gold coin will be based on the applicable gold price determined with reference to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association.

What is confirmed about eligibility

The Government Order confirms these basic conditions:

  1. The bride should be a woman from a family in Tamil Nadu.
  2. The family’s annual income should be up to ₹2.5 lakh.
  3. The marriage should take place in Tamil Nadu.
  4. The marriage should take place on or after 5 October 2026, the date of the Government Order.

Detailed eligibility and implementation guidelines will be issued separately, so more conditions may be added. One question to watch is whether a marriage that has already taken place since 5 October will count, and how families will prove the date. The source does not say, so wait for the guidelines.

Can you apply now?

No. The scheme has been announced and approved, but the dedicated application portal has not been launched. When it is, applications will be made online, and the government will announce the official website separately. No dedicated helpline number or email ID has been released yet either.

Documents

The final document list is not out. A tentative list suggests the following, but please treat it as a guess rather than a rule: Aadhaar card, income certificate, Tamil Nadu residence or nativity certificate, marriage certificate, age proof, a passport-size photograph and bank account details.

What families should do now

  1. Wait for the official portal and guidelines, and do not pay anyone for early registration. No one can legitimately register you before the portal opens.
  2. If a wedding is coming up, start collecting documents. An income certificate and a nativity certificate can take time to get, so it makes sense to begin early.
  3. Keep records of the marriage date and venue, since both the date and location matter for eligibility.
  4. Check the Tamil Nadu Government Portal and the Social Welfare Department website for the portal announcement.
