PM Internship Scheme: A Complete Guide for Young Indians
A 6-to-9-month paid internship with leading Indian companies, backed by the Government of India
For many young people, the hardest part of starting a career is the first line on the resume. Employers want experience, but experience needs a first opportunity. The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) aims to close that gap by placing eligible youth in real workplaces, paying them a monthly stipend, and giving them insurance cover while they learn. This guide covers the benefits, eligibility, application process and the rules you should know before you apply.
What Is the PM Internship Scheme?
The PM Internship Scheme is a Government of India initiative launched by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs on 3 October 2024. It offers internships in leading companies across the country, focusing on practical industry experience, workplace training and exposure to professional environments rather than classroom-style learning.
One point is worth stating plainly: completing an internship does not guarantee a job with the host company. The scheme builds skills and employability; it is not a recruitment channel.
Key Highlights
- Duration: 6 or 9 months, depending on the company and position (12 months for interns from the earlier pilot phase)
- Monthly assistance: ₹9,000
- One-time incidental assistance: ₹6,000, paid in two instalments
- Insurance: Free life and personal accident cover
- Age group: 18 to 25 years
- Nodal agency: Ministry of Corporate Affairs
- Mode of application: Online, through the PM Internship Scheme portal
What Do Interns Receive?
A monthly stipend of ₹9,000. This is split between two sources. The Government of India contributes ₹8,100 per month through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), and the partner company adds ₹900 per month from its CSR funds or other permitted sources.
₹6,000 one-time incidental assistance. Paid in two instalments of ₹3,000 each, this is meant to help with the initial expenses of joining an internship.
Free insurance. Interns get life and personal accident cover equivalent to the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) for the length of the internship. The government pays the premiums.
Real workplace experience. At least half of the internship duration involves actual on-the-job work, along with mentorship and industry-related learning.
A certificate of completion. Interns who finish successfully receive a certificate from the participating company.

Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, you must:
- Be an Indian citizen
- Be between 18 and 25 years old at the time of application
- Have passed Class 10, Class 12, ITI, a Polytechnic Diploma, graduation (for example BA, B.Sc., B.Com., BCA, BBA, B.Pharma, BE/B.Tech.) or an eligible postgraduate course (for example MA, M.Sc., M.Com., MCA, M.Tech.)

A few details matter here. Students in regular full-time courses are generally not eligible, though those studying through online, distance or correspondence courses can apply. Final-year students of full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programmes can apply with a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their institution.
Who Is Not Eligible?
You cannot apply if any of the following applies to you:
- You are under 18 or over 25 at the time of application
- You are in full-time employment
- You are in a regular full-time course, apart from the permitted exceptions
- Your family income exceeds ₹12 lakh a year
- Your family includes a permanent or regular government employee, including employees of Central or State Governments, Union Territories, PSUs, statutory bodies and local authorities (contractual government employees are excluded from this restriction)
- You have completed an apprenticeship under NATS or NAPS at any time

Documents to Keep Ready
- Aadhaar card
- Mobile number linked to Aadhaar (for OTP verification)
- Educational certificates and mark sheets
- A recent passport-size photograph
- Details of an Aadhaar-seeded bank account that is enabled for DBT
- A DigiLocker account (optional, but useful for e-KYC and fetching documents)
Your bank account must be linked to Aadhaar and DBT-enabled, or you may not be able to receive your stipend.
How to Apply
Applications are made online at the official portal, pminternship.mca.gov.in, or through the official mobile app on the Google Play Store.
Step 1: Register
- Open the portal and choose your preferred language.
- Select “Login/Registration” on the homepage.
- Enter your mobile number and submit it.
- Enter the 6-digit OTP sent to that number.
- Create a password and confirm it. Your dashboard will then appear.
Step 2: Complete Aadhaar e-KYC
You can verify your identity either directly with your Aadhaar number and OTP, or through DigiLocker by giving consent to share your Aadhaar details with the portal.
Step 3: Build Your Profile
Log in again with your mobile number, password and OTP. Then fill in your personal details, contact details, educational qualifications (with certificates uploaded), Aadhaar-linked bank details, and your skills and languages. Review everything and select “Complete Profile.” You must finish your profile before you can apply for any internship.
Step 4: Search and Apply
- Choose “Apply for Internship” on your dashboard.
- Search by state, district, sector and field of interest. Use the location radius filter if it is available.
- Open an internship with “View” to check the company, role, location, eligibility and duration.
- Select “Apply,” add an optional introduction about your strengths and what you hope to learn, confirm the eligibility declarations, pick your notification mode and submit.
- Track the status of every application from your dashboard.
What Happens After You Apply
The portal shortlists candidates based on their preferences, eligibility and company requirements, and forwards shortlisted applications to the partner companies. The companies then make their own selections. Applying does not guarantee selection.
Selected candidates receive an offer through the portal. After you accept, you must join on or before the reporting date in your offer letter. The company then verifies your joining on the portal, and that verification is what starts your financial assistance. During the internship you are expected to meet the company’s attendance, performance and internship requirements.
The Rolling Application Model
The scheme no longer runs in fixed rounds with a single deadline. Companies post openings continuously, and these rules apply to everyone:
- You can have a maximum of 3 active applications at a time.
- You can hold a maximum of 2 active offers, but you can accept only one.
- You must accept or reject an offer within 14 days, or it lapses automatically.
- Once you accept an offer, you cannot apply for or accept any other internship.
- If you hold two offers and have accepted one, you can switch to the other only within 15 days of your original acceptance.
- You must join by the reporting date. If you miss it, you get a 14-day grace period, after which you are automatically marked “Did Not Report” (DNR).
- A supervisor can approve a one-time extension of up to one month to your reporting date if you request it.
Rules on Dropouts, Termination and Breaks
These rules are strict, so read them before you accept an offer.
- Voluntary dropout: You get one more chance to join another internship, but you are first banned from the scheme for 6 months. A second dropout makes you permanently ineligible.
- Termination by the company for performance or conduct reasons means you can never participate in the scheme again.
- Repeated offer problems: Two consecutive rejected, lapsed or DNR offers lead to a 3-month ban. Two in total (not necessarily consecutive) lead to a 1-year ban.
- Sabbatical: A break of up to 2 months in total is allowed only for genuine emergencies, such as a medical emergency or the death of a family member, and needs approval from your supervisor and then HR. No stipend is paid during the break, and your end date is extended by the days you took off. If you need more than 2 months, you may be required to drop out instead.
Is It Worth Applying?
The scheme offers a rare combination: a structured placement with a recognised company, a stipend, a joining allowance, insurance and a completion certificate. For a first-time job seeker, a few months of genuine workplace exposure can make a real difference to a resume and to confidence in a professional setting.
Be realistic about the limits, though. The ₹9,000 stipend is modest, selection depends on the company, and there is no promise of a job at the end. The penalty rules also mean you should apply for internships you are genuinely ready to accept and complete.
Timing and Where to Get Help
According to the scheme’s information, it currently runs as a Pilot Project Extension, open on a rolling basis through December 2026, with each internship carrying its own application window. Check the portal for the latest vacancies and deadlines before you apply.
