Gujarat Surya Urja Rooftop Yojana (Surya Gujarat)
Rising electricity bills are a worry for many households, even as Gujarat has plenty of sunshine going unused on its rooftops. The Gujarat Surya Urja Rooftop Yojana, popularly known as Surya Gujarat or SURYA-Gujarat, is the state government’s flagship solar rooftop subsidy scheme. Launched on 5 August 2019 by the Energy and Petrochemicals Department, it helps residential consumers install grid-connected solar systems, cut their bills, and earn from surplus power. Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) is the nodal agency, and the state DISCOMs handle net metering and grid connection.
Key Benefits
Subsidy for residential consumers
| System capacity | Subsidy |
|---|---|
| Up to 3 kW | 40% |
| Above 3 kW up to 10 kW | 40% on the first 3 kW + 20% on the remaining capacity |
| Above 10 kW | No subsidy on the extra capacity |
Example: for a 5 kW system, you get 40% subsidy on 3 kW and 20% on the remaining 2 kW.
Subsidy for Group Housing Societies (GHS) and RWAs
- 20% subsidy for solar plants powering common facilities such as lifts, water works, street lights, gyms, swimming pools, and gardens
- Eligible capacity is limited to 10 kW per house and 500 kW per society, including systems already installed on individual houses
Other benefits
- Lower bills through net metering
- Extra income: DISCOMs buy surplus power at ₹2.25 per unit for the first 5 years, and afterwards at 75% of GUVNL’s average discovered solar tariff
- Full ownership of the system, with a free choice of empanelled installer
- Free maintenance by the installer for 5 years after commissioning
- You pay only the balance cost after subsidy to the installer
A consumer can claim either the state subsidy or the MNRE Central Financial Assistance, not both.
